WOW! Thanks to Dan Mall, I am blown away by the skills of the young kid (Pipoquinha) on the bass. That’s it, I quit playing bass today! Okay not really, but this kid kicks butt.

My Career As A Rapper

So my best friend David Reyes sent me an email with a song attached to it and when I opened it, I was shocked when I saw what he had sent. It was a song that I rapped in when I was in High School in 1999. I was actually visiting David’s church while he was recording a local rap artist from the DFW area and asked me if I wanted to rap on it. I laughed and told him I didn’t know how to rap. Long story short, I gave in. I sat down and came up with some lyrics in like 15 minutes and well… this is what was produced:

My First Hip Hop Concert

On February 23, 2010, I attended my first hip hop concert to see Jay-Z perform. I am not a big hip hop fanatic, but Jay-Z knows how to write some good music. His beats are fantastic and what made the entire show a big hit for me was the live band. The drummer and the bass player were hitting that pocket nasty. It made my friend Chad Whiteley and I look like amateurs.

The environment is a totally different story. As my friends and I walked into the lobby of the American Airlines Center, within seconds my lungs had already been struck by the presence of Mary Jane. Some of the guys were walking around in baggy starched pants with a leather jacket and SUNGLASSES inside the arena. I so wanted to say “DUDE THERE’S NO SUN IN HERE, TAKE YOUR GLASSES OFF!” but I kept my cool and kept walking. Other people wore … well I better be nice and not share, but some outfits were just too crazy.

As my friends and I were hanging out at the The Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7, I ran into my friend Hilary Kennedy and her fiance Drew. Hilary Kennedy is the face of Dallas’ KFWD Channel 52, “Just Fun TV” and the US Youth Soccer Show on the FOX Soccer Channel, broadcasted in over 32 million homes. She is also a host of The Bite Network and has published her first book, Career Diary of a TV Host: 30 Days on the Job. That girl is on the way to the top. Well she is probably already there. However, it was great seeing them.

Well I really don’t know what else to say about my first encounter at a hip hop event. It was crazy, it was fun and it will not be the last time I see Jay-Z. It did bring back a lot of memories from my high school days, but I am glad I was with a group of friends who would not have let me do anything stupid.

These are the CD’s I am currently listening to this month. There is no way you can celebrate Christmas without listening to the Elf Soundtrack and Josh Groban. Another band that I have been listening to the last couple of days is Metronomy. Their music video to Radio Ladio is really cool. It reminds me of Oompa-Loompas.

New Music On The Block

Every time I get in a creative state of mind, I pop in some really good emo. If you are wondering what the heck is emo, it is a broad title that covers a lot of different styles of emotionally-charged punk rock. In other words, it is short for “emotional.”

It wasn’t until 2002 when I was first introduced to emo by Aaron Tilstra. The first emo track Aaron introduced me too was Cute Without the ‘E’ (Cut from the Team) by Taking Back Sunday. That following summer, I spent a lot of time hitting up pawn shops looking for some good emo.

Once I entered the emo world, there was no turning back. I then starting listening to Chris Carrabba’s Dashboard Confessional and Further Seems Forever, The Juliana Theory, Thursday, Jimmy Eat World and even some hardcore stuff like Underoath and ZAO. Some friends and I even started our own band called Crown. We only played once or twice.

When I moved back to Dallas, hardly anyone listened to emo. But then I met Paul Bruno and it wasn’t until just about a month ago that I found out he is a big fan of all the same bands I listen too. By the way, Paul’s personal project Footsteps can be found at the bottom. Check it out. You will become a fan too.

Well I can just go on and on about emo, but it’s getting kinda late and I have to be up early tomorrow to get ready for 6 services at Gateway Church this weekend. I will be playing the bass at North Richland Hills campus. You can catch it live at gatewaypeople.tv.
